Video-on-Demand (VOD) is considered the next major application for network operators. While the model is not new, consumers’ expectations have changed dramatically, leading VOD offerings to include everything that is on demand from recent movie releases to standard network programming.

This shift in the VOD business model is raising new challenges for operators as they must now put VOD at the core of their service offering.
For satellite operators, existing near-VOD service is simply not enough to be competitively positioned in the new VOD market and they must, in spite of the inherent limitations of their network, find a solution to deliver an on demand experience without re-architecting their overall infrastructure.
For cable providers, the challenge is not about the ability to deliver the basic experience but instead to develop a richer on demand content offering without significantly increasing their investments, especially in the early phase of market adoption.
OpenTV’s On Demand Solutions allow operators to deploy a multi-platform VOD service strategy that aligns with their existing and future network infrastructure.
True VOD
OpenTV Core™ enables the deployment of VOD service whether it is delivered over cable or IP infrastructure. The solution, pre-integrated with leading video servers, leverages OpenTV HTML Browser™ to provide an easy to deploy and customize VOD experience.
Push VOD
OpenTV provides a complete solution to securely package, distribute, and manage large VOD content libraries. Based on OpenTV Core™ and OpenTV PVR™ products, it uses existing broadcast infrastructure to progressively store content onto a consumer’s device. The download process is done in the background using any available resources at the time of the download. This means that viewers are not interrupted while watching a program and that programs scheduled for recording are not skipped.
Hybrid VOD
OpenTV provides a video distribution solution for hybrid networks. Based on OpenTV Core™ and OpenTV PVR™, it leverages the built-in IP capabilities of the platform to provide a cost-effective way to acquire video over unmanaged networks. Combined with Push or even True VOD, it provides operators a solution that easily scales with their VOD service offering.
